MangaDex is one of the most-used places to read manga, manhwa and manhua online — and one of the most misunderstood. Readers ask the same few questions about it: is it safe, is there an app, why did a series vanish overnight, and is it okay to read there? This guide answers them plainly, with sources, so you can decide for yourself.

What MangaDex actually is

MangaDex is a not-for-profit reading site started in 2018. It doesn’t translate anything itself: volunteer scanlation groups upload their fan translations, and MangaDex hosts and organizes them. It is run by unpaid volunteers and funded by user donations and affiliate programs, according to its Wikipedia entry.

Three things make it popular:

  • No intrusive ads. The reader is clean compared with most free sites.
  • Strong search. You can filter by demographic, genre, theme, format and publication status, and keep a personal library.
  • Many languages. Chapters are uploaded in dozens of languages, not just English.

It also links out to official chapters on services like MANGA Plus for some series, which is worth using when it’s offered.

Is MangaDex safe to use?

For browsing and reading, MangaDex is one of the safer free sites: no pop-up ad networks, no forced downloads. The real risks are elsewhere:

  1. Your account data. In March 2021 MangaDex suffered a breach. According to Have I Been Pwned, almost 3 million accounts were exposed — email addresses, IP addresses, usernames and bcrypt-hashed passwords. The team took the site offline and rebuilt it from scratch (the current “v5” version). If you had an account before 2021, make sure that password isn’t reused anywhere else.
  2. Copycat domains. The real site is mangadex.org. Lookalike domains that copy the name are not run by MangaDex and are where the shady ads and redirects usually live. Check the address bar before you log in.
  3. “MangaDex app” downloads. There is no official MangaDex app for Android or iOS — staff have said so on the official forum. Any store listing calling itself “the MangaDex app” is unofficial. Mobile readers usually use the website, or open-source readers like Mihon that load MangaDex through an extension.

Short answer: reading on mangadex.org is low-risk; use a unique password and don’t install anything that claims to be its official app.

Why chapters and series disappear

MangaDex removes content when rights holders file DMCA takedown notices. In May 2025 a large wave of takedowns removed hundreds of series at once — including some that had no official English release, which upset many readers because there was nowhere else to read them.

So if a series you follow suddenly vanishes, it’s almost always a takedown, not a bug. Two practical habits help:

  • Keep your reading list somewhere you control (MangaDex’s library, AniList, or our My List), so you don’t lose track of where you were.
  • Check whether the series has been licensed — a takedown often means an official version exists or is coming.

Is it okay to read on MangaDex?

This is the honest part. Most chapters on MangaDex are unofficial translations. Readers who use it usually fall into two camps:

  • They read unlicensed series that have no legal English version, and switch to the official release once it exists.
  • They use it to discover a series, then support it on an official platform.

Either way, the creators earn nothing from scanlation views. If a series becomes a favorite, the most direct support is reading it where the author gets paid.

Where to support the creators

When a manhwa or manga has an official release, these are the places to read it:

  • WEBTOON — huge free catalog, daily updates.
  • Tapas and Manta — strong for romance and fantasy manhwa.
  • MANGA Plus — Shueisha’s official app, with recent Japanese chapters free.

We compare all of them — free chapters, ads, and which are official — in our guide to the best sites to read manhwa online.

Quick checklist before you read

  • ✅ You’re on mangadex.org, not a lookalike domain.
  • ✅ Your MangaDex password is unique (especially for pre-2021 accounts).
  • ✅ You didn’t install an “official MangaDex app” — there isn’t one.
  • ✅ For a series you love, you know where its official version lives.
